General

What is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition characterized by blemishes or lesions that arise when hair follicles become clogged. This can be due to an increase in inflammation, sebum (the skin’s natural oil), bacteria, dead skin cells, or other impurities.

The different types of acne that people get are whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, papules, cysts, and nodules. Whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, and papules are some of the most common types of acne we diagnose at King-Maceyko Dermatology. They’re generally considered a mild form of acne, while cystic and nodular acne is more severe, as they can cause significant facial scarring and require more serious forms of acne treatment.

QUESTIONS

Acne FAQs

Learn more about acne by reading through our comprehensive FAQs section. Our board-certified dermatologists broaden your knowledge of this common skin condition by answering questions like what causes acne, how acne scars form, and what the most effective ways to treat acne are.

Acne is generally caused by plugged follicles due to inflammation, excess sebum, bacteria, dead skin cells, and other impurities. However, these causes can be triggered by several different things, which is why some individuals get acne more often than others.

For example, genetics play a significant role in how much sebum your skin produces and the type of bacteria you have on your skin, while lifestyle factors such as dietary habits, stress, sleep patterns, and medication can all influence the development of acne.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne affects up to 50 million Americans per year, making it the most common skin condition in the United States.

Acne can be prevented to a certain extent. While you cannot modify your genes to change the amount of sebum your skin produces, you can modify some aspects of your lifestyle to improve your skin. This can include changing your skin care routine, eating a healthier diet, improving your sleep quality, and implementing stress management techniques to reduce cortisol levels.

If you would like to learn more about how to better take care of your skin to reduce the frequency of acne breakouts, we recommend contacting our team of experienced dermatology providers in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Certain types of acne—mainly cystic and nodular acne—can damage the skin’s tissue and when it attempts to heal the area with collagen, it either makes too little or too much, causing depressed or raised scars.

Additionally, picking or trying to “pop” an acne lesion can also damage your skin, triggering the formation of acne scars.

In most cases, yes, acne scars are permanent. However, you can significantly improve acne scarring with the right acne scar treatments. These treatments can include topical retinoids, dermal fillers, microneedling, cosmetic lasers, and dermabrasion.

At King-Maceyko Dermatology, our experienced providers use several different acne treatments to help our patients improve their skin. We follow a patient-first approach by building personalized acne treatment plans that generally include one or a combination of the following:
